 Preferred Places is a database of holiday cottages run by a mum working from an isolated cottage in order to juggle childcare and work. Preferred Places aims for excellence. Top priorities are bookings for owners and customer service. Katherine sets high standards and you will have the security of knowing you can expect personal service and a quick response to any queries or requests.

"A cottage industry in every sense of the word!" - The internet is the new cottage industry - Run by a mum, working from an isolated cottage, www.preferredplaces.co.uk, was launched at the onset of Foot and Mouth in the UK. Despite this the database has grown steadily and has proved so successful that it is now expanding to include Campsites (www.thecampingsite.com) and Bed & Breakfast Accommodation (www.thebedandbreakfastsite.com).

Preferred Places was set up in January 2001 by Katherine Mabey as a means of solving the eternal riddle of juggling parenthood and childcare.

As a family with pets, children and a love of the great outdoors it was always a challenge to find the perfect holiday property and the idea formed that a search tool geared towards people with specific needs, combined with ads which attempt to cover all required information, would solve this problem and enable people to spend more time looking at cottages that suited their needs.

Having completed a PhD at Leeds University (despite having two children along the way) Katherine is extremely dedicated to making the site work and committed to filling the properties using the database. She aims to break through the anonymity of the internet to provide a friendly personal service. Katherine works from home near Buxton in the Derbyshire Peak District with the "help" of Noah, Hattie, Bea and and a small menagerie of animals!

Following the setting up of Preferred Places, Katherine is creating a new site called EarthMummy .This site is dedicated to making it easier for people to achieve a greener lifestyle. Preferred Places is an environmentally friendly business in that it is almost a paperless office with very little waste of any sort. Katherine beleives that if each of us were to make a little effort with just a few things in our daily lives then together we could make a big difference.
